Cars vs Crossovers vs SUVs: What’s the Difference?
Shopping for a new car can get confusing. What’s classified as a car can have a hatchback that looks just like crossovers, which in turn greatly resemble an SUV. So what’s the difference, or is there one? Despite confusing classifications, each vehicle has distinct differences that sets it apart from the others. We’ll break them all down so you can learn for yourself.
Cars
Once the standard for all vehicles, cars still remain in production in high numbers. For some, a “car” classifies all types of vehicles, including crossovers and SUVs. But cars differ in their build from other vehicle types. Typically, cars come with four doors (sedans) or two doors (coupes) and seat between two and five. They range in size from compact to mid to full-size, like the Sonata or Accent, with many other sizes in between. Cars have long been preferred for easy handling, affordability, and fuel economy.
SUVs
Known for their size, sport utility vehicles are built more like a truck. That’s to say that the SUV body is built separately from the frame. An SUV’s size and durability once made it the vehicle of choice for large families or those who haul a lot of cargo. Hyundai doesn’t make any actual SUVs, although you may see some vehicles classified as one because of their utility and other features. With a reputation for gas guzzling and difficult handling, SUVs are losing the race for popularity, although several still remain on the market today.
Crossovers
Although crossover and SUV are often interchangeable terms to some, the difference is that a crossover is built like a car with a unibody construction. So although they might look just like an SUV, they’re built much differently. They’re more lightweight, easier to handle, and use less fuel than SUVs, making them one of the most popular types of vehicle on the market today. Crossovers offer the passenger and cargo room of an SUV with the convenience of a car, so it’s easy to see why they make up almost half of all vehicle sales. With a liftgate, two or three rows of seating, and easy maneuverability, crossovers are taking over the market, and for good reason. Examples include the Tuscon, Kona, Santa Fe, and new Iconiq5.
