The Hyundai Auto Hold feature can significantly improve your driving experience, particularly in city driving. The basic idea of Auto Hold is to keep your car in place while it is in operation even when the brake pedal is released. Hyundai of Mankato would like to tell you more about this feature.

Engaging the System

Auto Hold is at its most convenient when you are on city streets with long traffic lights, train crossings, or anything else that causes you to stop for a significant duration. To activate Auto Hold, simply press the Auto Hold button located on the center console near your transmission selector while the vehicle is turned on. After you press the button, the words “Auto Hold” will appear on your dash lit in white. This is to tell you that the system is on standby. When you brake to a stop, the “Auto Hold” dash light will change from white to green. This tells you that Auto Hold has been engaged and you can now release the brake pedal and the car will remain in place.

The system uses the ABS feature to engage the brakes. Thus you have the assurance that the car will remain in place even on steep inclines as all four brakes are fully engaged. If your car is equipped with the Idle Stop & Go system, both systems work together with Idle Stop & Go shutting down the engine and Auto Hold keeping the car in place.

Releasing the System

When it is time to move, simply press the accelerator pedal as you normally would. Auto Hold releases at the first indication of pressure on the pedal and will release with no delay to your transition from stop to start. The Auto Hold light returns to white and the system is ready to operate again, the next time you brake to a stop.

Auto Hold automatically turns off when you turn off the ignition. If you want to cancel Auto Hold simply press on the brake and push the Auto Hold button. The Auto Hold dash light will now turn off. You may want to do this during stop-and-go- traffic when the car’s image creep – the ability to slowly move in the absence of any pressure on the accelerator pedal – can be of convenience. It is also recommended that Auto Hold be disengaged when you drive in reverse, as it usually involves a slow speed and creep may be welcome.

Automatic Functions

Auto Hold will automatically engage the emergency parking brake in the following situations:

  • The hood or driver’s door is opened
  • The vehicle is at a standstill for over 10 minutes
  • The vehicle is on a steep slope.

Auto Hold is just one of many Hyundai features designed to improve your driving experience. If you have any questions about this or any other features, you can consult your owner’s manuals or ask any of the sales or service professionals at Hyundai of Mankato.
